Essential food for runners

Oranges, eggs, Greek yogurt, beans and salmon

Hitting the pavement, treadmill or trails consistently can be tolling for runners. It's important to provide your body with the nutrition it needs to keep your runs long and strong. Here are some of the best foods runners can eat to obtain the most nutrition and energy for runs of any distance.

Oranges

Stacked fields in the Houston Half Marathon and Marathon

World record holders present in Texas this weekend.

Though 2013 is fresh and in its youth, the year’s marathon action is ready to start in a strong way. This Sunday marks the annual Chevron Houston Marathon and ½ Marathon, and the fields ready to toe the line in all four races are definitely stacked.

Where we're from, Mary Jane has always been legal

More attacks on marijuana

CNN contributor offers same old BS arguments.

CNN has a big opinion piece up from David Frum, a CNN contributor who recently joined "a new organization to oppose marijuana legalization." Frum trots out the same tired old arguments: marijuana "damages brain development in young people." Heavy users "become socially isolated." The smoke is bad for your lungs. And the evidence "suggests" that it can trigger psychotic episodes.

Oh No They Didn't: Al Roker Sharted In The White House

What a lovely subject to start the day with. Yesterday, a clip/story started bouncing around the web about gastro-intestinal surgery (aka stomach stapling) where Al Roker was interviewed. In his description of his experience, he rather calmly let loose the following anecdote about visiting the White House. Gross.

For 2013, how about being yourself?

It’s the easiest, yet hardest resolution you could ever keep.

Once upon a time, I was a teenager who envied the popular girls. I had been one myself not many years before, back when most kids in a classroom could be called friends. Somewhere along the line, however, being friendly and funny stopped being very important, and the brands and makeup you wear started.

Why we need girls in movies

It should be super clear, but just in case it’s not…

I think it should be clear enough, but sometimes I hear a few naysayers whine, “We don’t need more girls in movies! Just because Buzz Lightyear is a boy doesn’t mean girls can’t relate to him or want to be like him.” This drives me absolutely nuts.

Fired over a grapefruit

Why are people so flippant and inhumane with one another?

The other day, my husband, who works in the grocery department of a major worldwide store, was threatened. Again. This time, it was because his store did not carry grapefruit.

Positive reinforcement for kids

Dangling carrots causes more harm than help.

How do you perform at work, at college, or anywhere else when you have someone looming over you declaring “Good job!” every time you scratch a pencil, burp or sneeze? You probably don’t have anyone doing this, but the average kid seems to. I feel worse for kids who get zero attention from their parents, of course, but this whole “Good job!” crap has to stop.

Free weekend fun

Need something to do during the cold months with your kids?

The winter months are upon us here in the Midwest, and though our first snow of the year is melting, there’s certainly more to come. We’re always on the lookout for cheap things to do indoors with our family, so I thought I’d take a moment to share a few of our ideas with you to share with your family.
